In January, the US was India's top oil supplier.

Data obtained from sources in the trade show that India's oil imports to the United States increased sharply from December to January, making Washington the fifth largest oil suppliers to New Delhi.

The data shows that India imported 218,400 barrels of oil per day from the U.S., compared to just 70,600 in December.

India's refiners, the third largest oil importer and user in the world, are preparing for increased energy imports from Washington as New Delhi aims to increase its energy purchases to $25 billion, up from $15 billion, last year. India's top oil supplier, Russia, increased its imports by 4.3% to 1.58m barrels per day last month.

In the next few months, India's purchase of Russian crude oil is expected to decline. Refiners will only buy Russian crude oil if it comes from companies and ships not sanctioned by America.

The escalating sanctions imposed by the West, including the United States, on Moscow have disrupted global oil markets and forced those who bought discounted Russian crude at a discount to find other ways to keep their purchases.

According to data, imports of Middle Eastern oil increased by 6.5% to 2.7 millions bpd in January. Iraq continues to be India's second largest oil supplier, followed by Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

After the Indian government informed them of the U.S. sanction weeks in advance, Indian refiners began to use non-Russian crude oil last month.

Data showed that the share of Middle Eastern oil in India's roughly 5.1 million bpd of crude imports rose to an all-time high of 53% in January, while Russia's share remained virtually unchanged from December.

According to data, India's oil exports increased by 4.5% in the first 10 months following the start of the fiscal year, April 1, 2024. They averaged 4.8 million barrels a day.
