Petronas seeks crude to improve output at Pengerang JV refinery, sources state

Malaysian state energy company Petronas remains in talks with sellers to buy Middle East crude filling in October for its jointventure refinery with Saudi Aramco as the plant ramps up output, trade sources said on Friday.

Petronas and Aramco have equal shares in the Pengerang Refining Company (Prefchem), also known as RAPID, which can process 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) of petroleum at its complex at Pengerang in Malaysia's southern state of Johor.

The refinery is increasing its crude processing rate this month, up from about 50% in July, some of the sources stated.

Refining runs have actually been cut previously due to maintenance at other refining systems consisting of the atmospheric residue desulphurisation system, they added.

An increase in output from the quick refinery will increase improved products supply in the region and weigh on refining margins, traders stated.

Prefchem did not respond to an ask for comment.

The fast refinery is set to enhance its unrefined imports this month to about 202,000 barrels daily, the greatest given that June 2023, approximates from analytics firm Kpler revealed.

It was not right away clear the number of October-loading freights Petronas will purchase for PrefChem.

The RAPID refinery usually processes Oman and Qatari al-Shaheen crude in addition to long-term Saudi crude supply from Aramco.
