Rio Tinto gets C$ 18 mln from Canada to decarbonize iron ore processing

Rio Tinto stated on Monday that the Canadian government had awarded it C$ 18 million ($ 13. million) to decarbonize iron ore processing in Labrador West.

The financing from the federal government's Low-Carbon Economy Fund. will enable Rio Tinto's Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) to. lower the amount of heavy fuel oil that is utilized in the. production of iron ore pellets and concentrate.

The government financing represents about 25% of the total. cost of the task, with IOC moneying the remainder of the. financial investment, Rio Tinto stated.

Setup of brand-new equipment will begin in the second half. of the year and is expected to be completed in the very first half of. 2025.

One of the world's biggest iron ore manufacturers, Rio expects. to minimize about 2.2 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. over the life time of the task.
