New Zealand to evaluate fuel security, supply chain threats

New Zealand stated on Tuesday it would perform a study to review the nation's fuel security requirements amid issues any potential disturbances to the worldwide supply chain might affect domestic materials.

The Pacific nation, which imports all its liquid fuels, said the study will check need forecast, engage with stakeholders throughout the supply chain and identify possible dangers.

We need to protect ourselves from possible crises in the house and overseas and to put measures in place to reduce and handle unfavorable effects, Partner Energy Minister Shane Jones stated in a statement.

Concerns over security of fuel supply have risen considering that New Zealand's only oil refinery closed in April 2022, just as global energy prices were rising as an outcome of Russia's intrusion of Ukraine.

Jones said the government would examine the reopening of the Marsden Point refinery, which shut due to falling margins. An interim report on the reopening of the refinery is due previously completion of 2024.

The Marsden Point now operates as a fuel import terminal, with many oil imported from refineries in Singapore, South Korea and Japan, main files revealed.
