China's July iron ore imports get on greater deliveries

China's iron ore imports leapt more than 5% in July from the previous month, customs data showed on Wednesday, due to a pickup in June shipments amongst miners to fulfill quarterly targets.

The world's largest iron ore consumer generated 102.81 million metric lots of the crucial steelmaking component last month, information from the General Administration of Customs showed.

That compared to 97.61 million heaps in June and 93.48 million heaps in July 2023.

Some miners increase deliveries in June to overtake their quarterly targets, contributing to greater imports in July, stated Jiang Mengtian, a Shanghai-based expert at consultancy Horizon Insights ahead of the release.

The increase in July was a little below experts' expectations for an increase of between 103 million and 110 million tons. Experts stated that was due to the fact that falling costs last month dampened some smaller sized providers' interest in shipping ore.

Iron ore shipments from India visited almost 20% to around 2.77 million lots last month, data from LSEG revealed.

Prices << SH-CCN-IRNOR62 > slipped 7% in July as demand wilted, with scorching heat and heavy rains impeding building and construction activity. China's iron ore imports amounted to 714 million heaps in the initially 7 months of 2024, a year-on-year rise of 6.7% , the information revealed.
