Sources say that Indian refiners require a wind-down period to reduce their Russian oil imports

Two sources in the refinery industry said that Indian refiners need to wait for a period of time to finish Russian oil deals before they can stop importing from this country. The government has not yet ordered them to do so.

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, announced on Monday a trade deal with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The agreement included a stop to Indian oil imports from Russia.

Sources said that Indian companies had already committed to cargoes arriving in March and loading in February, so it would take a 'wind-down period' to meet existing commitments. The sources spoke under condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak with media.

In exchange for India's lowering its trade barriers and ceasing to purchase Russian oil, the trade agreement with India would reduce U.S. tariffs from 50% to 18%. Instead, it would purchase oil from the U.S. and possibly Venezuela.

India was the largest buyer of Russian crude oil after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine 2022. This sparked a reaction among Western nations who targeted Russia's Energy Sector with sanctions.

The United States wants Russia to reduce its oil revenue to make it more difficult for Moscow to finance the war.

Trump stated that he and Modi discussed many topics, including Trade and ending the War in Russia and Ukraine. "He agreed to stop purchasing Russian Oil and to purchase much more from the United States, possibly Venezuela, and other countries."

Modi then posted on social media about his delight at the tariff reduction, but he did not mention a stop to Russian oil purchases.

Last week, it was reported that the United States told Delhi they could "soon" resume purchasing Venezuelan oil in order to replace Russian oil imports. Trump announced on Saturday that India will buy Venezuelan crude oil.

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Indian oil minister, said last month that India is diversifying its crude oil sources as its Russian imports are falling.

India's Russian imports of oil fell to the lowest level they've been in two years - December - while OPEC imports to India rose to a record high.

Refining sources reported last month that Indian refiners were buying more oil in Middle Eastern, African, and South American countries, as they reduced their Russian oil purchases. This was after discussions at a meeting of the government about accelerating an U.S. India trade deal. (Reporting and editing by Edmund Klamann; Nidhi verma)
