Lego to replace oil in its bricks with more expensive sustainable plastic

Toymaker Lego stated on Wednesday it was on track to replace the nonrenewable fuel sources utilized in making its signature bricks with more expensive eco-friendly and recycled plastic by 2032 after signing handle manufacturers to protected longterm supply.

Lego, which sells billions of plastic bricks annually, has evaluated over 600 various products to establish a new product that would entirely change its oil-based brick by 2030, however with minimal success.

Now, Lego is intending to slowly lower the oil material in its bricks by paying up to 70% more for licensed renewable resin, the raw plastic utilized to produce the bricks, in an attempt to encourage producers to enhance production.

This means a significant increase in the cost of producing a Lego brick, CEO Niels Christiansen informed Reuters.

He stated the business is on track to ensure that more than half of the resin it requires in 2026 is licensed according to the mass balance technique, an auditable method to trace sustainable products through the supply chain, up from 30% in the very first half of 2024.

With a family-owner committed to sustainability, it's a. advantage that we can pay additional for the raw materials without. needing to charge consumers extra, Christiansen said.

The move comes amidst a surplus of inexpensive virgin plastic,. driven by major oil business' investments in petrochemicals. Plastics are projected to drive brand-new oil need in the next couple of. years.

Lego's suppliers are using bio-waste such as cooking oil or. food industry waste fat along with recycled products to replace. virgin fossil fuels in plastic production.

The marketplace for recycled or renewable plastic is still in its. infancy, partly since a lot of readily available feedstock is used for. subsidised biodiesel, which is blended into transportation fuels.

According to Neste, the world's largest manufacturer of. eco-friendly feedstocks, fossil-based plastic is about half or a. third of the price of sustainable choices.

We notice more activity and willingness to purchase this. now than we did just a year ago, stated Christiansen. He declined. to state which providers or provide information about price or volumes.

Competing toymaker Hasbro has begun including plant-based or. recycled materials in some toys, however without setting firm. targets on plastic use. Mattel prepares to utilize just recycled,. recyclable or bio-based plastics in all products by 2030.

Around 90% of all plastic is made from virgin nonrenewable fuel sources,. according to lobby group PlasticsEurope.
