S&P Global reports that Indian steel prices could fall due to the U.S. Tariffs changing the alloy trade.

S&P Global stated in a report that Indian steel mills will likely see a steep drop in prices as U.S. tariffs on imports take effect. This could reshape the global trade in the alloy and redirect a glut into the South Asian nation.

The agency estimates that Indian steel prices may be corrected by about 3,000 rupees (US$34.52 per ton).

Steelmakers in the Philippines have had to contend with a growing influx of steel at discounted prices, as imports from China, South Korea, and Japan reached a record-high during the first ten months of this fiscal year.

In August of last year, steel prices in India fell to their lowest level in over three years. The average price per ton for hot-rolled coils was 52,267 rupees.

The 25% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imports of steel and aluminum into the United States will take effect on March 12 and have ignited a global trading war.

Ayushman Bharati, an analyst at S&P Global Ratings, said that "India's Steelmakers are caught in the rising geopolitical tensions and trade tensions which is creating more uncertainties in their outlooks."

S&P Global reported that tariffs make exports to the U.S. expensive and cause them to divert to other regions.

Bharati said that India, which gets 40% of its imports of steel from Japan and South Korea already, would likely see a higher influx once tariffs were imposed.

The U.S. imports 15% of its total steel from Japan and South Korea.

In 2024, India will have added approximately 15 million tonnes to its steel production capacity.

Bharati stated that "sluggish steel price could delay full utilization of capacity and hinder expansion."

Steel makers have seen their profits fall in the last year due to an increase in Chinese steel imports. These steels are often as much as 70 dollars cheaper per metric tonne than domestic steel. ($1 = 86.9170 Indian Rupees) (Reporting and editing by Leroy Leo in Bengaluru)
