As China returns from its holiday, copper prices hit their highest in over a week

The copper price rose on Tuesday to its highest level in more than a month, fueled by a positive mood and a stronger demand from China, the world's largest metal consumer, after markets reopened following a holiday.

Benchmark?copper for three months on the London Metal Exchange?had gained 2.4% by 1700 GMT to $13,182 per metric ton after reaching its highest price of $13,196 since February 12.

LME copper fell 0.7% on Sunday, but has gained 22.5% over the last three months. However, it is still well below its record high of $14,527.50, set on January 29.

Alastair Munro is a senior base metals analyst at Marex. He said: "The tariff announcement made over the weekend was at least marginally positive for metals markets, because it's good for China."

Investors believe that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on President Donald Trump’s emergency tariffs is a win for China. This belief has been reflected in a rise in Chinese stock market prices.

Munro said there were signs that the physical demand for copper in China was also increasing, as evidenced by the?Yangshan premium The price of copper in China has jumped 60% to $53 per ton on Tuesday.

On the first trading day after China's Lunar New Year holiday, the most active copper contract at the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose 0.8%, closing daytime trading for the Shanghai Futures Exchange at 101,510 Yuan ($14 728.88).

Copper stocks in LME registered warehouses Data released on Tuesday showed that the number of tons rose by another 1,350 to 243,175, which is the highest since March 2025. The amount has risen 71% this year.

Munro stated that it was crucial for the 'us to begin to see these stocks dissipate in the next 3-4 weeks, perhaps not this week or next.
