EU, guard dogs start action against airline companies over greenwashing

The European Commission and nationwide consumer defense authorities have begun action against 20 airline companies for misinforming greenwashing practices, the EU stated in a declaration on Tuesday.

Although the declaration stated the EU had worked together with Belgian, Dutch, Norwegian and Spanish watchdogs, a spokesperson said the names of the airlines will not be divulged at this stage as they are at a preliminary phase of the investigation.

The EU stated airlines needed to explain to what extend claims that the CO2 emissions caused by a flight could be balanced out by environment tasks or through the use of sustainable fuels can be substantiated based on sound scientific evidence.

If we desire accountable customers, we need to provide them with accurate information ... They should have precise and clinical responses, not vague or false claims, EU Commissioner for Worths and Transparency Vera Jourova stated in a declaration.
