Oil tanker crew tackle fire after projectile strike off Yemen - maritime agency

On Saturday, a crude oil tanker with the Panamanian flag caught fire after it was struck by a projectile unidentified off Yemen. This is the latest attack against commercial shipping in Red Sea.

Ambrey, a British maritime security company, said that the incident occurred 23 nautical miles north of al-Mukha port on the Red Sea.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO), which also reported the incident said that the crew extinguished the fire.

"Vessel reported safe. UKMTO also added that the vessel will continue to its next port-of-call in an advisory.

Ambrey stated that the tanker had been registered with Union Maritime Ltd., a UK-based company, before it changed its registration details last month, including name, operator and address.

Ambrey's statement stated that "at the time she was writing this, she had changed her course to starboard, and continued to travel to New Mangalore in India."

After the Israel-Hamas conflict, Houthi militants from Yemen have been attacking ships in the Red Sea for months. This has disrupted shipping around the world, forcing companies to take longer and more expensive routes through southern Africa. It also stoked concerns that the war may spread and destabilize the Middle East.

The Houthis claim that their attacks are in support of the Palestinians living in Gaza, and they won't stop until Israel ends its war in the enclave and withdraws.

The United States, Britain and France have launched airstrikes on Houthi targets and reclassified the militia as terrorist group. Reporting by Muhammad Al Gebaly, Hatem Maher and Clelia Oziel; Editing by Mark Heinrich & Clelia Oziel
