Zelenskiy: US Minerals Proposal Needs Work, Turkish Media Report

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, was quoted as saying that a U.S. proposal on a crucial minerals deal was unfair because it didn't include security guarantees. He also said he didn't want Ukraine to be a hub for raw material.

Kyiv sent Washington last week a revised version of an agreement that could allow U.S. investors to access its vast reserves of vital minerals in order to win U.S. backing, amid concerns from Kyiv about an earlier U.S. draft.

"I said, 'this document was not ready. We will not sign it. Zelenskiy told Turkish media that you continue to work on the document after Tuesday's talks in Ankara.

"I'm always willing to invest in our country and our natural resources. "If we give, we must receive," he said according to the state-owned Anadolu News Agency.

"We do not want to be a raw material centre for any continent."

In an interview earlier this month, Zelenskiy outlined the details of the agreement. Minerals in question include titanium, uranium, lithium, rare earth varieties and other minerals.

U.S. president Donald Trump has stated that Washington must "secure" its support for Kyiv, despite the fact that he has not committed to continue vital military assistance.

Zelenskiy’s visit to Ankara was timed to coincide with a meeting in Riyadh between U.S. officials and Russian officials, but without Ukrainians. The two countries were discussing the conflict in Ukraine.

Zelenskiy stated that he believes the Ukraine has support in Washington, but he would like to see Trump show more support.

"We can see that (the U.S. has) removed Putin from political isolation. But, it is their decision. When you say, "These are our plans to stop the war", this raises some questions in our minds. Where are we now? Where are we on the table? "This war is happening inside Ukraine," said he.

"There should people at the table that can stop (Russian president Vladimir) Putin from returning to war. They must also be able give us concrete, not just verbal security guarantees. He was quoted saying, "We are ready for a dialog of this kind."
