US and Russia agree to begin pushing for peace in Ukraine. State Dept.

The State Department stated that the United States and Russia had agreed to begin working together to resolve "irritants" in the U.S. - Russia relationship, and to find a way to end Russia's conflict in Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for 4.5 hours in Saudi Arabia. This was a follow up to the telephone call between U.S. president Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that they discussed the establishment of a mechanism for addressing "irritants in our bilateral relationship", with the goal to normalize diplomatic relations.

She said that both sides had also formed high-level teams who would work to end the Ukraine conflict in a manner "that is lasting, sustainable and acceptable to both sides" as soon as possible.

State Department stated that the meeting was a significant step in a process in its infancy.

Bruce stated that "one phone call and one meeting are not enough to create lasting peace." (Reporting and writing by Humeyra Pauk; editing by Ed Osmond, Chizu Nomiyama, and Doina Chiacu)
