Brazil will impose levies on US technology firms following Trump's steel tariffs

The newspaper Folha de S.Paulo published a report on Monday that the Brazilian government plans to tax U.S. technology companies if Donald Trump follows through with his plan to introduce a 25 percent tariff on steel imports to the United States.

South America is a major market for U.S. tech companies and a source of steel imports.

The report, which cites a Brazilian authority who declined to be named, states that Amazon, Meta Platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Alphabet's Google could face potential Brazilian levies.

Fernando Haddad, Brazil's Minister of Finance, said that the government will only comment after Trump's official measures have been announced.

He told reporters that the government had decided to only comment on concrete decisions and not on announcements which could be misinterpreted. "The government will not make any statements until it has made an official decision."

In 2024, a finance ministry official had floated the idea that a tax could be imposed on large tech companies to help meet fiscal targets if there were any shortfalls in government revenue.
