Official: India is exploring for critical minerals in Zambia and Australia

V.L., the Mines Secretary, said that India is looking at mining critical minerals in Zambia and Australia. Kantha Rao stated on Thursday that the fastest growing major economy in the world is looking to secure raw minerals such as lithium.

Rao stated that companies like Coal India and ONGC Videsh explore critical minerals in Australia.

India has been working to reduce its dependence on minerals like lithium, which is key for energy transition technologies.

India is still developing the technology for processing lithium, a field dominated by China.

Rao, in a press conference, said that the Zambian government had recently agreed to grant 9,000 square kilometers of land to India to explore cobalt and other minerals. India also has its eyes on mining important minerals in Congo and Tanzania.

India's Mines minister G Kishan Reddy has said that the country is exploring lithium reserves in Jammu-Kashmir and will have clarity by May 2025.

In February 2023, the government found its first lithium deposit in Jammu & Kashmir. The estimated reserves are 5.9 million metric tonnes. However, it has not been able to attract any bids for auctioning mining rights in this state.

India has identified lithium as a "critical" mineral for the energy transition and infrastructure sector.

New Delhi approved in January 2025 163 billion rupees (1,88 billion dollars) for the development of critical minerals. (Reporting and writing by Neha Arora; editing by Mrigank Dahniwala).
