Harmony Gold to meet annual production target despite first-half dip

Harmony Gold, a South African company, said Monday that it expected to surpass its 1.5 million-ounce production target in the entire year up to June 2025 even though the output was lower during the first half.

Harmony, South Africa's top gold producer by volume, announced in a trading report that gold production was expected to range between 790,000.0 ounces to 805,000.0 ounces for the six-month period ending December 2024.

The decline in production from 832,349 ounces Harmony during the same reporting period a year ago was mainly due a planned lower output at its South African underground mining operations and Hidden Valley, in Papua New Guinea. Production was boosted by ores that had a higher gold content in the previous period.

The second half of South Africa's financial year is expected to see underground grades higher than the 5.80 grams per tonne guided, largely due to a strong performance by Mponeng, which is the world's most deep mine.

Harmony, who produced 1.56 millions ounces for the entire year up to June 2024 has set an annual target of 1.4-1.5 million ounces.

In its report on half-year production, the company stated that it was "on track to surpass the full-year guidance". Reporting by Nelson Banya, Editing by SonaliPaul
