South Korea FM Cho asks Iran to ensure the safety of vessels in Strait of Hormuz

His office reported that Cho Hyun, the South Korean Foreign Minister, asked his Iranian counterpart on Monday to ensure the safety of vessels still in the Strait of Hormuz. He also expressed concern over the impact of Middle East conflict and the global economy.

Cho called Abbas Araqchi, the Iranian ambassador to Kuwait. He urged Tehran to stop attacks on civilian facilities and ensure'safe navigation through the Strait.

The ministry reported that Araqchi explained Iran’s position regarding the crisis and agreed to Cho’s request to continue communication.

South Korea is stuck with over two dozen vessels in the Gulf, and more than 100 crewmembers. This is because 'Iran has halted the tanker traffic across the Strait after a'strike by Israel and the U.S.

Korea International Trade Association statistics show that South Korea is a major buyer of energy, with 70% of its crude oil and 20% of its liquefied gas coming from the Middle East. (Reporting and editing by Toby Chopra; Jack Kim)
