Gold prices rise as Nasdaq stocks fall

On Wednesday, the major stock indices were mixed, near flat. The Nasdaq was weighed down by SpaceX shares, and U.S. crude oil prices fell. Gold?prices on commodity markets rose to the highest level in almost seven weeks after recent talks about Iran. Spot?gold rose 4.09% to $4,242.92 per ounce. SpaceX shares fell by more than 8%. On its first earnings call as an open company, the company boasted of faster than expected returns on its AI investments. However, investors were still concerned about how long Starlink could continue to fund costly investments.

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices fell more than 5% after results that exceeded analysts' expectations failed to live up to investors' high expectations. U.S. crude dropped?0.15%, to $75.64 per barrel. Brent rose to $79.79 a barrel. This is a 0.54% increase on the day. Two regional officials and a senior Iranian source said that the proposed deal between Iran & Oman would grant Tehran control over ships entering Gulf via Strait of Hormuz. This is the largest concession to Iran yet. Adam Sarhan, CEO of 50 Park Investments, New York, says that tech shares have slowed down after a period of strong gains. He said that "tech stocks have come a long way in a very short time." It's a bit too far and too fast. It's normal to see some profit-taking here, but I believe we will go higher. Short term, the market is just a bit overbought. The semiconductor index is down by 0.1% Wednesday, but still up over 7% this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 424.80, or 0.78 percent, to 54,509.86. The S&P 500 gained 3.23, or 0.04 percent, to 7,739.40. And the Nasdaq Composite dropped 97.21, or 0.37 percent, to 26,487.78. MSCI's global stock index rose by 5.12 points or 0.45% to 1,150.81. The pan-European STOXX 600 ended up 0.04% and reached a new all-time high. The drugmaker Novo Nordisk was down, despite a positive second-quarter profit beat. This was due to disappointing sales of the Wegovy weight loss pill.

HSBC shares fell as well, a day following?its results. Investors digested the analysts' reactions to the figures. Japan's Nikkei index rose to its highest level since July 23. Meanwhile, South Korea's stock market closed 3.8% higher. Treasury yields remained unchanged following the benign announcement of the U.S. quarter refunding. Investors continued to focus on economic data, culminating with Friday's employment report. The 10-year Treasury yield was flat at 4,627%. However, the 2-year Treasury yield -- which is more sensitive to expectations about Federal Reserve policy -- increased by?2 basis point at 4.214%.

The markets also reduced the probability that the Fed will raise rates in September to 57%, from 67%. After a historic intervention, the Japanese yen has stabilized. The dollar's value against the Japanese yen has?weakened by 0.03%, to 157.67.

Japan and the U.S. launched a rare, joint yen buying intervention last week. They also pledged to take further action if needed to support the currency. The dollar index (which measures the greenback versus a basket including the yen, the euro and other currencies) fell by 0.11% last week to 99.75. Meanwhile, the euro rose 0.13%, reaching $1.1544.
