New wind installations struck a record last year, report states

The worldwide wind market installed a record 117 gigawatts (GW) of brand-new capacity in 2015 but requires to add triple this amount annually by the end of the decade to satisfy environment targets, according to a market report on Tuesday.

The Worldwide Wind Energy Council (GWEC) report said capability installation in 2015 was 50% greater than the year before.

In 2015, new onshore wind accounted for 106 GW of the amount installed, while overseas wind represented 10.8 GW.

GWEC anticipates 158 GW of new wind installations to be added annually until 2028.

To satisfy targets concurred under a global climate pact, the industry must install a minimum of 320 GW a year by 2030, taking cumulative capability to 3 terawatts (TW), the report added.

Cumulative wind power capability passed 1 TW for the very first time in 2015.

It took us over 40 years to reach the 1 TW mark of around the world set up wind power. We now have just seven years to set up the next 2 TW, said GWEC's President Ben Backwell.

Development is extremely concentrated in a few big nations like China, the U.S, Brazil and Germany, and we require many more countries to get rid of barriers and improve market structures to scale up wind setups, he added.

The leading 5 markets for wind setups were China, followed by the United States, Brazil, Germany and India.

China set a new record with 75 GW of new installations commissioned, representing almost 65% of the worldwide total, while Latin America also experienced record development - up 21% from the year before - led by Brazil which had 4.8 GW of brand-new installations.
