Gold prices rise as Treasury yields fall; Fed minutes are in focus

Investors are awaiting the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s July meeting to get a better idea of its outlook for monetary policy. Gold spot rose 0.6% at $4,359.58 an ounce as of 0737 GMT after falling nearly 2 % in the previous session because of higher Treasury yields. U.S. futures gold fell 0.2% at $4,413.40. The non-yielding metal was under pressure on Tuesday due to a global bond sell-off. Long-term borrowing costs in major economies reached their highest level in decades. Kelvin Wong is a senior analyst at OANDA and said that reducing?expectations of Federal Reserve interest rates hikes, as well as rising fiscal budget worries, are positive factors for gold.

Minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting in July are due to be released at 1800 GMT. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are pricing in 67% of a Fed Hold and 33% of a rate increase next month. After a string of weak U.S. data, bets on a rate hike have decreased.

Gold's opportunity cost is reduced by lower interest rates.

Lukman Otunuga is the head of FXTM's market research. He said that a sustained break above $4.390 would open up (for gold) the possibility of $4.505. A break below $4.300 could expose $4.200 and $4.150. In geopolitical terms, U.S. president Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that there were no 'talks' with Iran, and that the Strait of Hormuz was open. This contradicted?Iran’s claim that the waterway remained closed to shipping. Oil prices rose for the fourth consecutive session.

Silver spot fell 0.1%, to $63.22 an ounce. Platinum rose?0.5%, to $1720.43. Palladium remained at $1290.55.

TD Securities stated that silver and platinum metals would benefit from a'supportive macroeconomic background in the second half of 2027. A weaker U.S. Dollar, a lower carry cost and a lowering inflation 'risks will likely drive a greater price response than gold.
