M23 rebels invade the outskirts of Walikale, a town in east Congo

Residents report that M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, continued their offensive on the eastern Congo, a day after both the Congolese president and the Rwandan president called for an instant ceasefire. They entered the outskirts the town of Walikale on late Wednesday night.

Janvier Kabutwa, a Walikale resident, reported hearing gunfire near the Nyabanzi district of the town. A source in the army, who did not want to be identified, claimed that the rebels faced resistance from progovernment militias after they overran Congolese soldiers.

M23's unprecedented march this year has taken them as far west as Walikale. This area is rich in minerals, including tin. It is located about 125km (80miles) northwest of the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Goma. The rebels captured Goma in January.

Alphamin Resources announced last Thursday it would temporarily stop its Bisie Tin Mine located 60 km north of Walikale due to the rebel advance.

The Congo president Felix Tshisekedi met with his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame in Qatar on Tuesday for their first direct discussions since M23 intensified its offensive in early January.

In a joint declaration with Qatar, they called for a "immediate unconditional ceasefire".
