Mozambique's post-election demonstrations set off force majeure at Syrah Resources' graphite plant

An unit of Australia's Syrah Resources has stated a force majeure event at its Balama Graphite Operation in the middle of postelection civil discontent in Mozambique, the miner stated on Thursday.

Shares in Syrah, which has a natural graphite supply offer with Tesla, fell as much as 32.1% in early trading to A$ 0.18, their lowest level given that March 2020.

Disputed election results that were announced in October triggered demonstrations from opposition supporters in Mozambique, setting off intensifying violence.

Syrah said it was unable to produce graphite at the Balama task in the December quarter due to the protests. It added that the production was crucial for filling out its item stock and for sales.

The movement of people and products, site gain access to and plant operations have continued to be interrupted, the miner said in a declaration.

The demonstrations' effect has also triggered the company to default on its loans with the

U.S. International Development Financing Corporation

( DFC) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Syrah is engaging with DFC and DOE concerning these occasions of default, the company said.

Previously this week, varied miner South32 had withdrawn its output forecast for its Mozal Aluminium smelter in Mozambique, citing the protests.
