Copper producer Aurubis to grow organically instead of through deals, CEO states

Aurubis, Europe's biggest copper manufacturer, plans to eschew large acquisitions and rather develop a network of recycling centers around the world as part of its focus on organic growth, its CEO said on Wednesday.

The business, which is emerging from a 2023 scandal when its copper was stolen by a the mob ring, is set to open a. U.S. recycling center by December.

That job is viewed as a blueprint for the building of. similar centers in other places since there are no practical. takeover choices, Roland Harings informed on the sidelines. of the World Copper Conference in Santiago.

We have to grow naturally because for our technique there. are no genuine (M&A) targets, he stated. We wish to grow in. recycling.

The $700 million Augusta, Georgia facility, the business's. first project beyond Europe, will have a preliminary capacity. of 90,000 metric lots per year that will grow to 180,000 metric. loads in a second phase.

What we have done there is the cookie cutter technique,. Harings said of the Georgia center. The objective is that. this is not a one-off. Recyclable products are available in. numerous regions.

Harings mentioned possible growth into Asia or Africa,. adding, absolutely nothing chose, however nothing omitted.

Aurubis in 2020 purchased Belgian-Spanish metal recycling group. Metallo, which Harings said would be the kind of business that. would be appealing for a takeover.

If there would be another 2, three Metallos, we would go. for them, because this was a very effective acquisition, he. said.

The Hamburg, Germany-based business has progressively raised its. capital budget, with plans to spend 990 million euros ($ 1.05. billion) in 2024, up from 660 million euros in 2015.

METAL THEFT

Mishandling of the copper theft, which cost Aurubis more. than 185 million euros, also cost Harings his job. His departure. this coming September, he said, would not alter the company's. growth strategy.

There is a political obligation, which I have as a CEO,. for the company, Harings said. Therefore I withstand that.

Aurubis has actually taken steps to avoid future copper thefts,. including designating third-party laboratories to conduct tests. for huge and valuable freights, Harings stated. He declined to. talk about whether there are continuous claims against scrap. providers included.

In case something like this would be possible again, the. detection is much earlier so that the damage will never ever be of a. same magnitude, he said.

Aurubis is one of the world's leading copper scrap buyers to. source from varied suppliers, with secondary input using up to. 45% of its copper production.

When asked whether the company's next executive will be from. the recycling market, Haring declined to comment.

Harings, who signed up with Aurubis in 2019 after previous functions. across the metals industry, stated he had no instant prepare for. after he leaves the company.

Recycling and the circular economy is a really, extremely. fascinating field, Harings stated. So I'm looking into different. chances..
