Xi Lula intensify their meetings to strengthen China-Brazil ties and look towards Trump

The government in Brasilia announced that Brazil's president Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva will visit China next month to meet with President Xi Jinping for the third time since he took office in 2023. A fourth meeting has already been planned for July.

Brazil's steady pace of bilateral meeting underscores its warming relations with the United States, its largest trading partner. A diplomat in Brasilia described this as "inevitable" given that the world is adapting to President Donald Trump's unpredictable policies on trade.

"The natural way is to search for alternatives." "China is one of them," the diplomat said, who spoke anonymously to allow him to speak freely. He added that Brazil was also seeking to reach a regional deal with the European Union, and to boost cooperation between the BRICS group.

"I'd call it a policy of risk reduction." The relationship between the United States and Brazil is high-risk, so there's a natural tendency to seek alternatives," said the diplomat, who added that Brazil already shares a close relationship with China. In Brasilia, Xi Lula and their diplomatic relations were upgraded in November last year. They also signed more than 30 agreements for cooperation on infrastructure, energy and agribusiness.

According to the Brazilian Government, Lula will attend a meeting between Chinese officials and leaders of Latin America and Caribbean in Beijing on 13 May. Diplomats anticipate Lula and Xi will hold private discussions there.

Xi will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro in July. Xi will also be visiting Brazil in November for the United Nations Climate Summit, where officials expect that 1,000 Chinese business leaders will attend. (Reporting and Editing by Lisandra paraguassu, Brad Haynes, Manuela Andreoni)
