The Swedish Supreme Court has ruled that activists cannot sue the state for climate action

The Supreme Court of Sweden ruled Wednesday that Greta Thunberg and other young activists cannot sue the Swedish state over their alleged inaction against climate change.

A district court in 2022 could file a class-action lawsuit claiming that the state has violated their rights under the European Convention on Human Rights, by failing to do enough to limit the climate change or mitigate its effects.

After the state asked for the case to be dismissed, the district court of 2023 requested clarification from the Supreme Court on whether such a lawsuit can be effectively tried in a Swedish Court.

"A court can't decide the Riksdag, or the government, must take specific actions." The political bodies determine independently which climate measures Sweden needs to take," said the Supreme Court in a Wednesday statement.

The district court was asked by the current 300 plaintiffs, who call themselves the Aurora Group, to order Sweden do more to limit the global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. (Reporting and editing by Terje Solsvik, Louise Rasmussen, Stine Jacobsen)
