Johnson Matthey UK namess Richard Pike CFO as part of leadership change

Johnson Matthey, a British auto catalyst manufacturer, announced on Monday that Richard Pike, an outsider, would be appointed chief financial officer and that Chairman Patrick Thomas would step down as part of its efforts to strengthen its operations.

Standard Investments, the company's largest shareholder, has pushed the company to examine its operations and restructure the board in order to improve its performance.

Johnson Matthey, a company that manufactures catalytic convertors and pollution filters and processes platinum-group metals for automobiles, announced Pike would join them from packaging firm DS Smith.

Pike's "proven record of financial leadership" will be crucial as we continue to implement our transformation strategy, Chief Executive Liam Condon stated in a press release.

By 0912 GMT, Monday, its shares, which had fallen 21% by 2024, were nearly 1% higher at 1,436 pence.

Pike was the group finance director of DS Smith from March 2023. He was previously the CFO of Biffa (a waste company that was privatized in 2022).

Johnson Matthey announced that he will succeed Stephen Oxley as of April.

The company said that Chairman Thomas would step down following its annual general assembly in July, and it has begun the search for a successor.

Standard Investments did not respond to a request for comment when it was contacted.

These moves are made at a time of escalating tensions in the trade market.

On Sunday, U.S. president Donald Trump announced that he would impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the United States. This is in addition to existing metal duties.

Johnson Matthey, whose roots are in the testing of precious metals, and which will generate roughly half its revenue by fiscal 2024 through its metals division, stated in November that they expected minimal impacts from tariffs at first.
