Petrobras bids for Galp's oil field in Namibia, looking for opportunity abroad

Brazil's staterun oil firm Petrobras has actually made a nonbinding offer to purchase a significant stake in Galp Energia's substantial offshore oil discovery in Namibia, Petrobras expedition and production director Sylvia dos Anjos informed on Friday.

If accepted, the quote would make Petrobras the operator of the Mopane oil and gas field, which has actually an estimated 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent, Anjos said in her very first interview because taking her brand-new function last month.

We are the best deepwater operators, said Anjos on the sidelines of an oil and gas conference in the northeastern state of Sergipe. If (Galp) don't select us, it's their loss.

Petrobras is seeking opportunities abroad due to undesirable problem in getting environmental licenses to explore new areas in Brazil, Anjos said.

The firm has actually struck stiff resistance from Indigenous groups and ecological regulators slowing its efforts to drill in promising overseas areas near the mouth of the Amazon River.

Workers at environmental company Ibama have also been slow-walking all licensing this year due to a labor conflict.

We wish to work in Brazil, but if we are not welcome, we will go elsewhere, and we will preserve our production, Anjos said.

More than 12 rivals, including Exxon and Shell , have actually revealed interest in purchasing a 40% stake in Galp Energia's oil field, formerly reported. Anjos did not state whether the bid was to purchase the full 40% or a smaller share.
