'No factor to justify the mistrust and attitude' of Niger, Benin president says

Benin President Patrice Talon said Niger has not responded to his country's concerns and his Nigerien counterpart did not meet with Benin's mining minister on a visit today amidst a disagreement over exports of crude oil from Niger through a port in Benin.

Relations between the West African neighbours have actually been strained given that a July 2023 coup in Niger led the local bloc ECOWAS to enforce stringent sanctions for more than 6 months.

Trade flows in the region were anticipated to normalise after the bloc lifted sanctions, but Niger has kept its borders closed to items from Benin.

In a telecasted address on Thursday, Talon stated that throughout meetings in Niamey previously this week, Benin restated its custom-mades company was prepared to work together with its counterpart in Niger to permit regular deliveries of Nigerien oil through its port terminal.

But, he said, that would only be possible if the border was officially opened, at least to oil shipments.

He stated the Nigerien delegation did not make any reaction to the issues his mines minister, Samou Seidou Adambi, raised in Niamey.

As I speak, I have not gotten any information or information from our Nigerien siblings along the lines anticipated by everybody, Talon said.

On May 15, Benin provisionally reversed a decision to block exports of Nigerien oil via its port and accepted hold a. conference in between the two countries, Adambi said at the time.

But a long-term option has not yet been concurred.

Talon stated he composed a letter of appeasement to junta. leader Abdourahamane Tchiani and asked Adambi to deliver it in. person, but that Tchiani did not receive the minister.

I go around the world asking individuals to come and purchase. Africa ... and here I am, witnessing what makes investors. hesitant, Talon said in the televised address.

But I remain enthusiastic that the soothing of relations in between. Niger and Benin will not be postponed any longer, due to the fact that there is. no reason to validate the mistrust and mindset of our brothers. in Niger; the time of demonstration and sanctions due to the coup that. happened in Niger has passed.
