Japan's NYK Line, Singapore's GCMD to release six-month biofuel bunker task

Japanese shipping major NYK Line and the Singaporebased International Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) will launch a sixmonth project for trialing marine biofuel for bunkering, they stated in a joint declaration on Thursday.

The companies will trial the use of a biofuel mix consisting of 24% fat methyl esters (POPULARITY) and very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) onboard a short-sea vehicle provider that will call at multiple ports.

By 2030, NYK aims to minimize the group's greenhouse gas emissions by 45% from 2021.

The carrier has actually been conducting full-blown trials of the long-lasting usage of biofuels in navigating existing heavy oil-powered vessels to attain this target, stated Nobuhiro Kashima, senior handling executive officer of NYK Line.

Biofuels consisting of popularity are amongst numerous alternative ship fuels, also known as bunker fuels, that shippers are exploring to decrease carbon emissions.

The project will assess the overall cost of ownership of using biofuels, including the expense of fuel and extra maintenance costs.

It will also identify and take on possible difficulties associated to constant biofuels use, such as engine system rust and valve failures.
