Palestinian officials claim that Israeli strikes have killed 18 people in Gaza and the Rafah crossings for patients are now closed.

Palestinian officials reported that Israeli airstrikes and tank shelling killed 18 people in Gaza, including four kids, on Wednesday. Israel also halted the flow of patients across the Rafah crossing.

The 'Israeli' military said that tanks fired on Gaza, and airstrikes were launched after a gunman had shot at Israeli soldiers. A reservist was seriously injured.

The strikes were directed at Gaza City and Khan Younis, a southern city. Gazan officials said that Israel also stopped the flow of patients across the Rafah crossing into Egypt two days after the border had reopened. This allowed a trickle?of Palestinians for the first time since months to cross.

Red Crescent spokesperson said that patients who had been preparing to cross Rafah in order to receive treatment had arrived at the hospital in Khan Younis, only for them to be told by Israel that the evacuations had been postponed.

The hospital where Raja'a Abu Teir was waiting for her evacuation told her that the crossing had been closed.

COGAT (the Israeli agency that controls the access to Gaza),?said on Wednesday in a press release that the Rafah crossing was still open but that they hadn't received any coordination details from WHO to facilitate the crossing.

The WHO didn't immediately respond to an inquiry for comment.

TRUMP PLAN REOPENING THE CROSSING

The October ceasefire, which was the first phase in President Donald Trump's plan for ending the fighting between Hamas and Israel militants, included a requirement to reopen the crossing.

Gazan medics reported that 16 patients and 40 members of their entourage from Gaza crossed the border into Egypt on Tuesday.

Hamas Police source said that 40 people crossed the border from Egypt into Gaza on Tuesday evening.

Trump announced the beginning of the second phase in?January where both sides will negotiate the future governance and reconstruction of the shattered Enclave.

The key issues of the withdrawal of Israeli troops from over 50% of Gaza and the disarmament by Hamas are still unresolved. Meanwhile, the fragile ceasefire is marked with near-daily violent incidents.

According to Gaza's health officials, Israeli fire has killed at least 531 people since the start of the truce. The majority of these victims were civilians. According to Israeli authorities, Palestinian militants killed four Israeli soldiers during the same time period.

Gazan health officials report that Israel's two year offensive on Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of more than 71,000 Palestinians. It also displaced the majority of the population and left the vast majority of the area in ruins.

According to Israeli statistics, the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which triggered war, killed approximately 1,200 Israelis. Nidal al Mughrabi reports from Cairo. Tala Ramadan contributed additional reporting; Pesha Magd wrote the article; and Ros Russell edited it.
