Saudi Neom, DataVolt sign agreement for $5 billion AI project

Saudi Arabia's NEOM (a Red Sea industrial and urban development) has signed a contract with DataVolt for the development of a net zero artificial intelligence 1.5 gigawatt project in its Oxagon Industrial Zone, according to the Saudi state media agency.

SPA reported that the project will be operational by 2028. It is expected to cost $5 billion for the first phase.

The announcement comes at a time when the Kingdom is racing to become a hub for artificial intelligence, despite regional competition from the UAE, Qatar and other countries. This includes capitalising on the booming demand of generative AI technologies, which require vast amounts processing power.

Yasir al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, touted the kingdom last year as a potential hub for artificial intelligence outside the United States. He cited the energy resources and financing capacity.

Last year, it was reported that the Saudi government had a plan to create a fund with about $40 billion to channel for AI and foreign partners.

NEOM is a large development, roughly the size of Belgium, that will eventually house nine million people. It is central to Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification strategy, dubbed “Vision 2030”, which aims to reduce dependence on oil revenues.

Oxagon will be a city powered by renewable energies, according to NEOM's website.
