United States will not return nuclear weapons to Ukraine

The United States is ruling out going back to Ukraine the nuclear weapons it quit after the Soviet Union collapsed, White House national security consultant Jake Sullivan said on Sunday.

Sullivan made his remarks when questioned about a New york city Times article last month that stated some unknown Western officials had actually suggested U.S. President Joe Biden could offer Ukraine the arms before he leaves workplace.

That is not under factor to consider, no. What we are doing is surging different traditional capabilities to Ukraine so that they can effectively safeguard themselves and take the battle to the Russians, not (providing) nuclear capability, he informed ABC.

Recently, Russia said the idea was outright madness and that avoiding such a circumstance was one of the reasons why Moscow sent out soldiers into Ukraine.

Kyiv acquired nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union after its 1991 collapse but gave them up under a 1994 agreement, the Budapest Memorandum, in return for security guarantees from Russia, the United States and Britain.
