Ambatovy, a cobalt producer in Madagascar, has been affected by the cyclone.

Traders reported that the cyclone which hit Madagascar this week has stopped 'production' at Ambatovy Cobalt and Nickel Miner. They added that a prolonged outage could increase prices for battery materials.

Ambatovy is owned by the Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp and the state-owned Korea Mine Rehabilitation and Mineral Resources Corporation. In 2024, it will produce?around 28,000. metric tons nickel and 2,500 tons cobalt.

Exports are likely to be disrupted, as Madagascar's principal port Toamasina has been?hit severely.

Ambatovy & Sumitomo didn't?respond to requests for comment.

Ambatovy produces Nickel and Cobalt Briquettes that are easily crushed to small particles, and then dissolved in Sulphuric Acid to produce sulphates. These sulphates can be used for electric vehicle batteries.

The price of cobalt is also used in aerospace and has remained stable at around $26 per lb. Since February last year, when the top producer Democratic Republic of Congo placed an export ban on cobalt, prices have increased by?160%. In October, it lifted the ban and introduced annual export quotas.

Analysts predict that 'global cobalt supplies' will be around 285,000 tonnes this year, and around 70% of them will come from Congo. Reporting by Pratima Deai and Polina Dimitt. Mark Potter edited the article.
