U.S. Copper hits record highs, increasing premium over LME benchmark

U.S. Copper Futures reached a new record on Thursday. They increased their premium over the global benchmark, with less than a week to go until the U.S. tariff on imports of the metal is scheduled.

The most active COMEX Copper Futures rose by 1.1%, to $5.884 per lb, after reaching a high of $5.959. Meanwhile, the London Metal Exchange's three-month copper remained unchanged at $9,926.50 per metric ton, as of 0930 GMT.

The premium between COMEX and LME copper has increased to 31%, up from 29%.

The premium was still below the 50% tariff that President Donald Trump had planned. Market participants were waiting for the confirmation of the deadline of August 1, and the list of copper products which would be subject to the tax.

We are concerned about copper's upward trend. EwaManthey, an ING commodities analyst, said that any change in Trump's tariff policy – whether there are exemptions or a lowered rate – could lead to a fall in the COMEX premium.

Copper in COMEX owned warehouses Inflows into these funds have slowed in recent days.

Manthey stated that this trend will likely continue, as it will improve the availability of copper outside of the U.S., and keep the global copper price under pressure.

The metals market is focused on the upcoming China-U.S. Trade Talks in Sweden, U.S. Trade talks with other countries and Washington's ongoing investigation of potential import tariffs for certain critical minerals.

China, which is the largest consumer of metals in the world, has until August 12 to come up with a deal or face higher U.S. Tariffs.

Zinc, among other LME metals rose by 0.3% to 2,870.50 per ton, after reaching its highest level in four months of $2,880. Tin rose 0.5% to $35,980, after reaching its highest level since April 7, when it reached $35,100. Nickel reached $15,640 - its highest level since May 23 - and rose 0.2% to $15,600.

Lead gained 0.1%, bringing it to $2.032.50. Aluminium increased by 0.3%, to $2.658. (Reporting and editing by Leroy Leo; Polina Devtt)
