Due to US tariffs, Canadian brewers buy local grain and Chinese cans

P hil smith, like many Canadians, is buying more Canadian grain as well as Chinese cans in response to the U.S. Tariffs placed on his country.

He doesn't want American cans at the moment, even though Canada is a major aluminum producer.

Smith said, "In this instance, we will just switch to the Chinese market," as he toured his Tinhouse Brewing Company, which produces Higher Knoll Double Hazy and Handyman Pale ale, among other beers.

It won't be a problem for him because Chinese cans are about a penny cheaper each. But it is one of several small losses that U.S. businesses have suffered as Canadians express their anger and frustration over the tariffs, and the statements made by the White House.

Some Canadians are cancelling trips to the United States after some provinces in Canada have removed American wine from their liquor stores.

The brewery uses approximately one third U.S. grains, one third European grains, and one third Canadian grains. Smith stated that they now use 80% Canadian grains and 20% European grain.

Smith anticipates that some of the American customers who have visited Tinhouse's taphouse in the past will now disappear. Smith is counting on consumers' growing desire to buy local and Canadian products to make up for any lost sales.

Smith said that if locals buy local and stay local, it might be a net gain. I suspect that in the end this will be a net lose for everyone: the small business owner, the big business owner and the consumer.
