JD Vance: Giving US economic interests in Ukraine is a guarantee of security

JD Vance, the U.S. vice president, told Fox News Monday that Washington's economic interest in Ukraine's future will provide a guarantee of security for the country which Russia invaded in 2022.

Why it's important

Donald Trump is seeking a deal on minerals with Ukraine, which has a wealth of rare earth and lithium minerals. This would be a way to repay the billions of dollars that were given to Ukraine by the United States during Russia's invasion. Trump has said that he would give more information on the potential deal Tuesday.

The talks between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the White House Friday ended in bitter exchanges without any formal agreement.

KEY QUOTES

Vance stated in an interview that the best way to ensure security is by giving Americans a financial advantage in the future of Ukraine.

"That's a much better security guarantee than the 20,000 soldiers from some random country who haven't been in a war for 30 or 40 years."

Vance added: "What the President has consistently said is that, of course, there is no door closed, as long Zelenskiy will be willing to talk seriously about peace. You cannot refuse to discuss details of any peace deal in the Oval Office, or anywhere else.

CONTEXT

Trump has been pressing for an agreement to end the conflict.

France, Britain and possibly other European countries offered to send troops into Ukraine in the event that a ceasefire was reached - something which Moscow had already rejected. Zelenskiy insists that a ceasefire should come with explicit security guarantees by the West. (Reporting and editing by Muralikumar Aantharaman, Stephen Coates, and Kanishka Sing in Washington)
