Trump told reporters on Friday at the White House that Nippon was now considering an investment in U.S. Steel, including debt.

Trump replied to a question about whether he would support a Nippon minority stake in the U.S. firm, saying: "Minority stake? I wouldn't care much."

He added, "What they are doing now is that they will be investors and I believe they will be investing in debt and other things."

Nippon has been pursuing U.S. Steel for $14.9 billion now for over a year. This proposal was highly politicized in the run-up to November's U.S. Presidential election. Both former President Joe Biden, and Trump pledged to stop it.
