CATL in talks with Tesla, global car manufacturers for US licensing, WSJ reports

Chinese electricvehicle battery maker CATL remains in talks with Tesla and other unnamed car manufacturers to accredit its battery technology in the U.S. rather of developing its own plant there, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The scale of cooperation and details about what technology Tesla would certify from CATL are still being gone over and will depend on the EV maker's cash flow, the report stated, citing an interview with CATL Chairman Robin Zeng.

The Chinese business's existing partnership with Ford Motor will be the model for similar cooperation with other U.S. carmakers, the report included.

Ford stated in November it would downsize the investment for its Michigan battery plant to produce low-cost lithium-iron batteries based upon technology certified by CATL following pushback from U.S. lawmakers.

The WSJ report on CATL comes in the middle of an international downturn in EV demand and as U.S. lawmakers tighten their grip over the battery industry to prevent China-produced minerals or Chinese battery business from winning electric automobile tax credits.

Ford, CATL and Tesla did not immediately react to requests for remark.

CATL is likewise working on faster charging batteries for Tesla and providing equipment to the Elon Musk-led business's factory in Nevada, according to an interview Bloomberg News had with Zeng.

Zeng had actually informed reporters previously this month that the company was in discussions to establish research study and development centers in Hong Kong to produce new innovations that can be licensed abroad as domestic EV demand weakens.
