Gold prices dropped nearly 1% after reaching a record high the previous day, as the U.S. Dollar strengthened amid fears of a trade war in response to President Donald Trump's tariff measures.

Gold prices fell by 0.9% at $3,776.05 an ounce as of 0303 GMT, after hitting a record high of $2,817.23 per ounce on Friday. U.S. Gold Futures were down 0.9% at $2,810.80.

The U.S. Dollar Index hovered at a three-week high, causing greenback-priced Gold to be more expensive for overseas buyers.

Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. The 10% tariffs will be implemented on Tuesday. White House officials confirmed that there would be no exemptions to the tariffs.

Canada and Mexico have ordered retaliatory actions, while China has said that it will challenge tariffs before the World Trade Organization (WTO) and take countermeasures without specifying them.

Tim Waterer is the chief market analyst for KCM Trade. He said that the markets are a bit rattled by the recent tariff dramas. Demand for safe-haven investments such as gold may limit the immediate decline.

The $2,750 range needs to hold in order to prevent a bigger pullback.

Bullion is a good investment in times of geopolitical and economic turmoil.

Citi stated in a report that further tariff increases should be bullish on gold, and will likely push the price to $3,000 an ounce.

J.P. Morgan also noted that the bearish contagion of equities may weigh on gold near-term, but that disruptive tariffs are continuing to fuel a bull case for silver in the medium term.

COMEX gold traders reduced their net long positions by 3,766 contracts, to 230592, in the week ending Jan. 28.

Silver spot fell by 1.4%, to $30.87 an ounce. Platinum dropped by 1.9%, to $958.72. Palladium also declined 1.7%, to $991.50. (Reporting and editing by Subhranshu Sahu in Bengaluru, Ashitha Shivaprasad from Bengaluru).
