LME copper hits two-week low on issues over China need, Trump tariffs

London copper rates extended their decrease to a twoweek low on Tuesday, as concerns over bleak need from leading customer China and the potential impact from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies weighed on market sentiment.

Criteria copper on the London Metal Exchange ( LME) was down 0.6% at $9,045 a metric load, as of 0405 GMT, after touching its most affordable level because Jan. 9 earlier in the session.

Economic fundamentals point to a weaker copper cost as Chinese growth still appears underwhelming and the threat of global trade wars are increasing, stated Kyle Rodda, senior financial markets analyst at Capital.com.

Information on Monday revealed that China's production activity suddenly contracted in January, keeping alive calls for stimulus on the planet's second-largest economy.

Additional weighing on sentiment were fears of capacity tariffs, which are back in the picture after the U.S. and Colombia pulled back from the verge of a trade war.

The dollar index climbed up 0.6% after taking an overnight struck, as a broad shakeout in financial markets followed the emergence of China's DeepSeek totally free AI assistant, which claims to utilize lower-cost chips and less information.

A stronger dollar makes greenback-priced products more expensive for holders of other currencies.

The DeepSeek chip, which raised the prospect of less power and spending required for AI chips moving forward, is unfavorable for copper, said Marex consultant Edward Meir.

Trading was also impacted by the lack of Chinese purchasers, who were away for the Lunar New Year holiday. The Shanghai Futures Exchange will be closed from Jan. 28 until Feb. 4.

On the other hand, a Reuters poll showed that experts have marked down their projections for copper costs in 2025.

Three-month aluminium was down 0.4% at $ 2,592. Zinc fell 0.1% to $2,812 a heap, lead dropped 0.4% to$ 1,942, nickel eased 0.1% to $15,550,. while tin gained 0.3% to $29,720.
