China's coal imports from Russia increase to eight-month high in May

Russia's coal shipments to China rose to the highest level in 8 months in May after Moscow suspended export responsibilities, main data revealed on Thursday.

Russia's coal exports to China increased to 9.1 million metric loads in May, according to Chinese customs administration data. That was up 1.5% on the year and the greatest level given that September.

Shipments were anticipated to increase in the short term after Russia suspended export duties throughout May to August, a China coal industry association said last month.

China's deliveries from Australia increased 24% to 6.7 million heaps last month.

That was below 7.19 million lots in April, the highest level because July 2020 - right before China put a yearslong casual restriction on Australian coal imports.

Imports from Mongolia, mainly coking coal, jumped 59% on the year last month to 7.23 million lots, benefiting from enhanced cross-border logistics and a deficiency in domestic production of coking coal.

Indonesia, China's largest coal supplier, delivered 16.97 million loads in May, down 7% from a year earlier.

China's total coal imports rose by 11% compared with May a. year earlier, enhanced by a 3% drop in domestic output during. January-May.
