India cancels winter games for Kashmir due to 'insufficient snowfall

India has postponed their national winter games due to a lack snow in Gulmarg ski resort, which is located in northern Kashmir territory. The event was scheduled for this month.

The games were scheduled to take place from February 22-25. Around 300 athletes are expected to compete in 4 snow sports: ski mountaineering (ski mountaineering), alpine skiing (alpine skiing), snowboarding and Nordic skiing.

Rauf Tramboo of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir said, "We've decided to postpone this event because key ski slopes do not have enough snow."

Snowfall on the slopes is usually between 7 and 8 feet (2 meters).

The Kashmir Sports Council announced on Monday that a new assessment would be made once snow conditions improved. A revised update would then follow.

Last January, a similar lack of snowfall had led to fewer visitors in ski resorts and hotel rooms in the Himalayan Region. This region is shared by India and Pakistan and ruled by both.

Experts fear that the hot, dry weather in Kashmir could affect the country's primary economic sector, the horticulture, by causing forest fires and drying up lakes.

Kashmir is famous for its lush meadows and tulip garden, as well as its scenic lakes, snow-capped mountains and lush meadows.

In February, temperatures were 12 degrees Celsius (53.6degF), above normal. It has led to crops that would normally remain dormant till late February becoming active only in winter," said Sameera Qayoom. She added this was an "unsettling pattern".

The dry weather has dried up dozens of springs, including the Mughal Garden, a 17th-century garden in Achabal, about 70 km south of Srinagar, the summer capital. (Writing and editing by Angus MacSwan; Sakshi Dayal)
