South Sudan's vice president's spokesperson says that the oil minister, as well as several military officials have been detained.

A spokesperson for the vice president said that South Sudanese troops had arrested the Petroleum Minister and senior military officials allied to First Vice President Riek Makar. This could jeopardize a peace agreement that ended the civil conflict.

Since the 2018 agreement, South Sudan is officially at peace. The conflict that lasted five years between Machar and Salva Kiir killed hundreds of thousands. The relationship between the two men is still strained and violence often breaks out in rival communities.

Machar's spokeswoman Puok Both Baliuang stated that the Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol and deputy head of army were arrested. All other senior military officials who were allied to Marchar were also placed under house arrest.

Baluang said that "as of right now, we have not been given any reason as to why these officials were arrested or detained."

Baluang confirmed that South Sudanese soldiers were also stationed around Machar's home, even though the vice president was able to reach his office Wednesday morning. (Writing and Editing by George Obulutsa, Gerard Doyle, Peter Graff, Ammu Kanampilly)
