US nuclear regulators approve develop of test little modular reactors in Tennessee

U.S. nuclear regulators on Wednesday said they would release building permits for a test small modular reactor center in Tennessee, advancing the development of the nation's brand-new nuclear market.

The Hermes 2 complex, which will be constructed by California-based Kairos Power, consists of two 35-megawatt reactors and a shared power generation system, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission stated in a declaration.

Carbon-free energy from small modular reactors, which promise to be constructed quicker and at a lower cost than conventional big nuclear plants, have actually drawn the interest of Big Tech to power its surging data center electrical energy requirements.

Last month, Google signed an arrangement with Kairos to purchase electrical energy from its small modular reactors starting in 2030 on the planet's first power purchase contract of its kind.

No little modular reactors are in operation in the United States.

In 2015, the NRC authorized construction authorizations for Kairos' Hermes presentation reactor, which will be used to notify Hermes 2.

Hermes 2 will still require NRC approvals before going into service. The test center will be used to provide functional information used for the advancement of a larger nuclear power plant for commercial power production, the NRC said.
