European spot power prices diverge hugely in the middle of technical problems

Technical problems at one of Europe's shortterm power exchanges on Tuesday have seen costs for power deliveries for Wednesday in crucial markets Germany and France diverge enormously while delaying the publication of costs for other locations.

Day-and-night deliveries of power, also called baseload, in the German market for Wednesday provided at 103.01 euros ($ 110.28) per megawatt hour (MWh) on the Oslo-based exchange Nord Pool.

At Paris-based Epex Area, the very same power cost 492.04 euros/MWh, exchange information showed. For the French market, day-ahead baseload power delivered at 2.96 euros/MWh at Epex Area, compared to 105.98 euros/MWh at Nord Swimming pool.

Usually, the prices at both bourses are the exact same due to a. market coupling function that matches quotes and deals from the. order books of all the exchanges authorised to run such. auctions.

Epex Spot dealt with a technical issue with its trading system. today, a representative for the exchange stated.

This caused a failure of the marketplace coupling and different. auctions being run, resulting in various rates.

Epex Spot is working on an in-depth analysis of the marketplace. occasions, consisting of order book analysis, the representative included.

The decoupling also resulted in a delay to auctions for the. Nordic region, with order books for the Nordics and Baltics. being resumed, a spokesperson for Nord Swimming pool stated.

There were still no results readily available for the areas as of. 1522 GMT.

In an operational message posted on its website, Nord Swimming pool. stated the results were expected no later than 2000 CET.

The problems with the day-ahead auctions are most likely to. impact on how exchanges and power grid operators will manage to. match demand and supply in the stabilizing markets on Wednesday to. ensure a stable system, some experts stated.
