EUROPE GAS-Prices rise on Ukrainian energy attacks, drop in Freeport flows

LONDON, April 11 - Dutch and British wholesale gas rates increased on Thursday on concerns about attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and as gas flowing to the U.S. Freeport melted gas (LNG) export facility was set to drop to near absolutely no.

The benchmark front-month contract at the Dutch TTF hub increased by 2.00 euros to 29.35 euros per megawatt hour ( MWh) by 1609 GMT, while the June contract was 2.02 euros higher at 29.60 euros/MWh.

In Britain, the May contract climbed up by 6.80 pence to 74.15 pence per therm.

Intensive attacks on Ukraine's power and gas possessions is scaring the market and the Freeport issue is also a chauffeur for gains, a gas trader said.

Russian rockets and drones destroyed a big electrical energy plant near Kyiv and struck power facilities in a number of areas of Ukraine on Thursday, authorities said.

The attack completely damaged the Trypilska coal-powered Thermal power plant near the capital, while strikes attacked two underground gas storage websites earlier but those facilities continued to operate.

The majority of Ukraine's gas storage capacity is in the western part of the country and it has the ability to save around 30 billion cubic metres of gas, with capacity also being used to European consumers.

Added to that, the amount of natural gas streaming to Freeport LNG's liquefied natural gas (LNG) export plant in Texas was on track to drop to near no on Thursday, data from financial firm LSEG revealed.

That drop in expected feedgas came one day after Freeport said one of the plant's 3 liquefaction trains tripped. The United States is the greatest LNG exporter to Europe.

European gas need was weak in March, around 26% listed below the 2017-2021 average, according to Morgan Stanley experts.

But, need in Asia is picking up with Chinese imports up 30% year to date. If Europe needs to take on Asia for LNG freights over the summertime that will support rates, they added.
