Union petition at Tesla's German plant demands longer breaks, more staff for Model Y ramp-up

Around 3,000 employees at Tesla's German facility signed a petition calling for longer breaks and additional staff. The company, however, said that most of its workers were happy with their jobs. This is a sign of the ongoing conflict between the unions and U.S. electric vehicle maker.

According to a flyer from IG Metall, the union's representatives will present a petition signed by 3,086 employees to the management at a Thursday works council meeting.

Tesla announced that it will present its own results at the same meeting. Around 7,500 out of 11,000 employees at the plant were asked if they were satisfied in their job.

According to a Tesla statement, 80% of employees said that they were happy, 5% were unhappy, and the remainder were neutral.

The carmaker will ramp up production for its new Model Y - a redesigned mid-size SUV manufactured in Berlin - and have given 300 temporary workers permanent contract starting next month.

A representative from IG Metall stated that, while they are happy with the additional staffing, there is still concern that it will not be sufficient to meet the increased production demands when the Model Y ramp up accelerates. (Reporting and editing by Victoria Waldersee)
