Fertiliser company K+S warns that tariffs will affect U.S. Farmers

German mining company K+S said that the United States' proposed import tariffs would be very difficult for American farmers.

When asked about the tariffs, the company stated that "The United States, as one of the biggest users of potash fertilizers, has no notable production of potash-based fertilisers of its own, and relies therefore on higher import quantities."

The decision just made poses a huge challenge to the domestic agricultural sector, it said.

The company ships approximately 300,000 tonnes per year of potash to the U.S. from its Bethune facility in Saskatchewan, Canada, compared with the total U.S. imports of about 10,000,000 tonnes.

The impact of the change on K+S's business was "relatively small". K+S said it could move volumes quickly from Canada to other countries and was looking at expanding exports of its German mines to the United States.
