EV tariffs might hurt European companies and industry, Polestar CFO states

Import tariffs imposed by the European Union and the United States on Chinamade electric automobiles will hurt European based companies, the chief monetary officer of Swedish EV maker Polestar said on Thursday.

Steep tariffs just recently enforced by the U.S., the European Union and Canada on automobiles made in China have prompted numerous car manufacturers to accelerate strategies to move parts of their production to other countries.

CFO Per Ansgar told analysts in a conference call related to its 2nd quarter report on Thursday that he had remained in a. meeting with the European Commission that day to talk about the. tariffs.

He included that he did not believe the Commission would protect. European industry by imposing tariffs, which might hurt European. companies that are investing in technology and producing tasks in. Europe.

Naturally, it would be much better for Polestar and for the. European industry if we would have less or no boosts of the. tariffs, Ansgar said.

Polestar produced cars and trucks specifically in China up until. this month, through factories owned by its co-founders China's. Geely and Volvo Cars, making it susceptible to the hefty tariffs.

In Europe, Polestar will receive a 19.3% tariff due to being. part of Geely's group, this is on top of EU's basic 10% task. on vehicle imports, a step the Commission states is aimed at. levelling the playing field and countering what it states are. unfair aids.

However, production of its Polestar 3 SUV began earlier. this month in Volvo Cars' South Carolina plant in the U.S. where. it in time will provide both the U.S. and European markets.

The business told Reuters previously today following. Canada's tariff statement that it was examining the situation. and expected its South Carolina production of Polestar 3 to be. a crucial component. It did not elaborate when asked if a firm. choice had actually been made if the U.S factory would likewise provide. Canada.

While its Polestar 2 will for now continue to be made only. in China, the business plans on moving part of its production of. Polestar 4 to South Korea, where production start-up is anticipated. for Mid-2025 and will provide the U.S market.

Discussions are nevertheless likewise underway according to Ansgar to. also supply Europe through the plant in South Korea, which is. run by Renault Korea Motors.
