Indonesia thinks about ending licenses for some nickel pig iron production

The Indonesian government is carrying out an extensive evaluation relating to the termination of permits for the RKEF smelters which make products in the kind of ferronickel and nickel pig iron, a mining ministry authorities stated on Tuesday.

The world's greatest nickel producer is experiencing a fast deficiency of ore after a rise in downstream investment, prompting the government to seek methods to reserve stocks for higher value included products such as the nickel chemicals utilized in making batteries for electric lorries.

Irwandy Arif, a senior official with the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, stated the federal government is concentrated on the development of High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) smelters - which extract nickel and cobalt from laterite ore bodies to produce Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate, a precursor product for the battery market - and smelters that produce nickel matte.

It is unclear whether the possible termination will use to existing permits.

Reserves of ore graded above 1.5% are expected to last until 2029 assuming there is no more exploration, Irwandy told participants at an industry conference organised by the Shanghai Metal Market.

When a major exporter of nickel ore, Indonesia prohibited deliveries of unprocessed nickel in 2020 to bring in investment onshore.

The Indonesia Nickel Miners Association (APNI) has likewise urged the government to enforce a moratorium on brand-new pyrometallurgy plants to extend the life time of high-grade reserves.

Indonesia's top-quality 1.7% nickel ore is utilized mainly to produce nickel pig iron, a feedstock for stainless steel, with EV batteries utilizing lower grade nickel.
